By the time of the 1900Census, John (aka Philip) and Mary had a total of 11 children, only 6 of whom were still living. Also, a Michael ARBOUR lived with his adoptive family just a couple of houses down the street from Philip and Mary. Were they somehow related? Was Michael possibly an illegitimate grandson of Philip? Or was he a child of one of Philip's sons who may have already passed away?
We know that John died Jan 1900 - Jan 1909, and the 15 Sep 1905 death date is the only one in Minnesota for a John ARBOUR during this time span.
___
Bio from Facebook on 01 Jun 2010:
01 June 1832 -- Born in Perce, Quebec, John ARBOUR was the 7th of14 children of farmer and fisher Joseph ARBOUR and his wife Helen DONAGHUE. As a young man, John (aka Philip) worked as both a farmer and a fisher, which was quite common in their seaside town. On 02 October 1855 in Perce, he wed 16-year oldMary McCARTHY. The newlyweds immediately began their family, which eventually included 11 children - all of whom were born in Perce. However, by the time of the 1900 Census, while Mary had borne a total of 11 children, only 6 of them were still living. Just after the birth - and death - of their youngest child, John and Mary decided to make the momentous move to the United States. Initially, they settled in Wisconsin, but soon moved to Minnesota, finding their home in Duluth. InDuluth, John worked as a longshoreman, never far from the water. We know that John died between January 1900 and January 1909. The only death date for a John ARBOUR in Minnesota during this time span is 15September 1905, which we can fairlyconfident conclude belongs to this John, as there were no other John ARBOURs living there. John and Mary are the proud progenitors of 35 grandchildren and at least 14 great-grandchildren.

Debbie had two children. A son named Jerry (his father was her stepfather's son Jerry Villeneuve) and a son named Trevor (unfortunately when he was conceived Debbie's schizophrenia was not being treated and she had no idea who the father was). She died when Trevor was quite young and her brother Willie raised him until he was about 16 or 17 . . . atthat point Trevor moved in with his 1/2 brother Jerry.

From daughter Catherinevia email on 19 Jul 2009: I'm not sure if I told you or not, but I am the primary caregiver of my mother who is terminally ill.Fridays and Saturdays can sometimes be overwhelming as I deal with my housework, her, groceries etc.
From Catherine via email on 19 Jul 2009: I asked mom when Aunt Lillian got married butunfortunately my mother's mind is not quite what it usedto be. She was fine earlier in the evening but as the evening wore on she couldn't even remember how Aunt Lillian got to be an Arbour. I willkeep trying.
___
Story from Catherine via email on 19 Aug 2009: My mother's sister owns a cottage on the Quebec side. We used to spend many a summer weekend there . . . that in itself is funny because my mother is terrified of all"nature". She hates bugs, mice, snakes, etc. Anyway we were all at Aunt Irene's cottage, I was about 15 at the time. My mother was having a grand old time. She decided she was going to entertain everyone with hersinging and dancing - night time in the country is dark - very dark. Mymother tripped over a fallen tree and broke a couple of toes. She refuses to go to the hospital because she hasbeen drinking. Monday morningwe are home again and mom calls our family doctor. The doctor has an opening so mom goes. The doctor took some x-rays and tells mom three toes are broken and she puts these little splint thingies on them. She asks my mother how she broke her toes and my mother tells her: Al Cool. The doctor is confused and thinks it's a person. Mom does not clear up thedoctor's confusion. Alcool was a brand of gin (I believe) at the time.
Story from Catherine via email on 19 Aug 2009: About 6 years ago my mother decided to change her carpeting. She got a good deal (on the Quebecside) but you had to install it yourself. Mom convinced Rod (my sister's hubby) andI to do it. We picked the following Saturday. Momasked if itwould be okay for Aunt Kay to come over for the weekend. I said yes, because I thought it would keep mom out of our hair as we worked. Rod and I got busy (about 9 am) and ripped outall the old carpeting and scraped away the underlay that had stuck to the hardwood floors. It was hotand nasty work. We worked all day. Rod had to be home for 6 and I toldhim that I could finish up on my own. I justhad the hallway and stairsleading to the basement to do. He left. Mom has been steadilydrinking all day and I kept trying to get her to eat to no avail. At 6 I told her I was taking a supper break and that if she didn't eat I would force feed her. She said she would eat. I went upstairs to eat and came back down an hour later. When Igot in I could tell that she hadn't eaten butshe told me that she had ordered food for her and Aunt Kay from the local pizza place (Fred's). I get busy with the carpeting, about 10 minutes later I see flashing blue lights outside the living roomwindow. ThenIsee two police officers heading to the door. Mom makes it to the doorbefore I do. And she says: "Where's my pizza?" to the officers. The officers asksher what the emergency is just as I'm running to the door. Isay there's no emergencyhow can I help you officer? As my Aunt Kay swings her head around the door and says, don't forget the wings. I push both mom and Aunt Kay out of the way and go out on the verandah with thepolice. The male officer tells me that they got a 911callfrom this address. I tell him that I know for certain that my mother nor my aunt could have made the call becauseI was right there and they were noton the phone. THEN THE LIGHT BULB goes off in my head and I ask them to wait amoment. I go back inandyell down in to the basement where my brother is - surprisehe's drunk. I asked him if he called 911. He says, I don't know but I called somebody and told them we were hungry but it wasn't an emergency yet. I curse and run back outside andI lookedatthe officer and said rather wearily just shoot me and put me out of my misery. The lady officer asks if I'm okay and I explain theentire day and situationto her. She is sympathetic; the male officer - not so much. We don't joke about shooting people. The lady officer speaks to him quietly and he settles down. Of course I realize it was a stupid thing to say I tellhimBUTyou don't live with these nuts-- I do. Anyway the police leave with the warning that if they get another calltheywill haveto arrest someone - I was actually thinking of begging God to let mom or Ricky call again. I go back in and mydarlingmother and aunt ask where the food is.I tell them that neither one of them is the brightest crayon in the box and that that wasthepolice not Fred's delivery. Mom says, well, what didthey want???? I just looked at her and went backto work. When I saw the headlights of another car I was at the door in two seconds flat. It was Fred's. I paid him. They ate. I finishedmy work andwent upstairs. Brendan had been out for a while when he got back I tell him tearfully what has happened. He starts laughing his head off - I could have chokedhim. The next day I go downstairs and mom and Aunt Kay are having theirmorning coffee. Iaskthem if they remember last night - neither one does - I tell them what happened. Mom looksatme and tells me not to make up stories. My brother Ricky looks at me and apologizes. Mom looks at meagain and says, you mean it's true. Ohyes,I say, and guess what you old darlings, next time I won't interfere and I'll let them cart you all away.
I always tell people I run an old age home - it's kind of true - my mother and my two brothers who live with her downstairs are allolder than Iam. AND I do take care of them - making sure they have food, clothes etc.

From grandson Scott SHIPPEE <sshippee a copleycg.com>: Anna and Ernest for a long time lived in the same house as Rose and her husband. Anna ran a small luncheonette in a building in the front called Anna's Luncheonette for a few years. They later moved to 20 Hare Street in West Warwick, where they lived until my grandfather died in 1970. Anna later moved in with my parents while they were living at 46 Helen Avenue, Coventry RI. In 1977-78we moved to 29 Gardner Avenue, in West Warwick. You might note a similarity with the address that Anna was born (10 Gardner), that address nolonger exists, as Gardner ave now starts wth 25. Both my Grandmother and Grandfather were mill workers, Fabric & Dye works for the most part, as far as I know.

I always had this feeling about Hélène. Both her parents are reported to be deceased ("défunts"), their name is Joseph Arbour and Hortense Arbour. I believe Hélène (she is from Gaspé) is an illegitimate daughter of Hortense ARBOUR. Joseph ARBOUR is reported to be her father but I think it was put in just to "fill in the blank". I haveno proof about this, it's just a feeling. What's yours?

From Joan SCHMUT <jschmut a hotmail.com> on 09 Mar 2006: Ernest Arbour is the stepchild from Maurice's second marriage. My dad's mom died in 1930,then his dad remarried to Ernest's mom. Ernest and Laura had three kids, one natural daughter and then they adopted twin boys. The daughter is Sandra who married Lawrence Swain. They had four kids, most of them live in Espanola. The twin boys are Ronald and Donald. [Note: Joan's father is a brother to Laura LAJEUNESSE.]
Regarding Ernest's mother, from Joan SCHMUT on 27 Jul2007: Well, as faras the brother Paul goes, he left home at a young age to go live in Toronto. No one seems to know what the mom's name is. . . I wish my father was still alive because I'm sure Icould learn more. I'm curious to learn this too. I'm curious to learn where she comes from. I've heard that maybe she could have been a war bride but this is only speculation.
From Joan SCHMUT via email on 12 May 2008: What I remember of Ernest Arbour is that he and Laura lived with herfather (Maurice) all the time. She kept house for them. This was when they moved into town. I guess they had it withfarming. They only had one girl and adopted twin boys. Ernest smoked a pipe and had a gruff voice.

My grandmother (Isobel Connors) had a child out of wedlock. She never identified who the father was. That child was my aunt Lillian Ann. When Lillian was about a year old my grand-mother met and married my grandfather (Joseph Alexander Arbour). Lillian was aware that grandpa was not her biological father. She fell in love with grandpa's brother Willard Ernest Arbour. They hadseven children together. They later divorced.
From Catherine via email on 15 Jul 2009: Okay here goes: I am not sure where you got all those different last names for my Aunt Lilian. But I am 100% positive that her name was Lilian Ann Connors at birth. She wasborn in Westmount, Quebec,on 7 October 1930. She was born to my grandmother Isobel Connors. My grandmother never named Lilian's father. My family lived with Aunt Lilian for a month when we moved from Campbell's Bay, Quebec to Ottawa, Ontario when I was 10 years old. My mother and her 1/2 sister Lilian were very close. I do not know when Aunt Lilian married my great-uncle Willard. BUT it is highly likely that they had a couple of children before they married.
From Catherine via email on 19 Jul 2009: I spoke to my cousin Ruth (Lillian and Willard's daughter) on Friday. She is coming over for tea sometime this week and will bring her mother's birth registration card to me. I spoke to my Aunt Irene on Friday evening and she says that Grandma(Isobel Connors) probably did not have Lillian baptised. Here is the story I was told: Grandma got pregnant, she did not identify the father. Her father kicked her out and she went to stay with her older sister Sadie during the pregnancy. Lillian was a home birth. Aunt Irene figuresgrandma was ashamed and did not have her baptized because she did not want the baby to be registered as a "bastard" and "father unknown". After Aunt Lillian was born, my great-grandfather (George Connors) needed help at home so Grandma (and baby Lillian) went back home to help. She later met my grandfather, married him, and the rest is history. Mom told me on Friday evening when Aunt Irene was visiting that Aunt Lillian once found"something" in an oldtrunk Grandma had but she didn't know what it was. My Aunt Lillian tried almost to the end of my grandmother's life to find out who her father was - Grandma would never tell. There has got to be a story there.
From Catherine via email on 18 Aug 2009: Lillian (mom's 1/2 sister) married her "uncle" Willard. They had 7 children. Theirs was not a match made in heaven and those poor kids suffered for it. The marriage didn't last long. Aunt Lillian was anabusive mother and the kids were taken bythe Children's Aid Society a number of times - but always given back. The sad thing is out of the 7 children only 2 lived happy lives as adults. I was not particularily close to my Aunt Lillian. Weshared a love of vintage jewellery and I was given a few of her pieces when she passedaway.

On 21 Sep 1926, Herve arrived in Canada via the US port of St Albans, VT. The 12-year old was bound for his Uncle Edmond ISABEL, 193 St Paul St, Trois-Rivieres, QC, having been living with his sister Julia and her family in New Bedford,MA.
Where was Herve in the 1930 Census?
Is appears as though Herve either died or Herve and Evelyn were divorced before 1953. That year they were not living together and she retainedher "Mrs." title. --> nb: They must have divorced, as Herve did notpass away until 1963.

LENSER, Patricia Ann (nee Arbour) 1952 - 2009 Passed away on Wednesday,17 June 2009. Beloved wife of Gordon Lenser. Predeceased by mother Lillian Arbour. She leaves behind sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many friends. Friends are invited to visitat St Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 518 Donald Street, Ottawa on Monday, 22 June 2009, from 9 am, until time of Memorial Mass at 11 From Catherine MOUSSEAU DUNNE via email on 19 Aug 2009: My cousin Patsie who passed away this past June had awonderful sense of humour. She used to turn the awful things (her motherwas Lillian) that happened at home as a childinto funny stories. Aunt Lillian sent her to my grandmother's house one summer for 2 weeks. Patsie told my grandmother thather birthday was the next day. My grandmother quicklywent to the five and dime store and bought her a gift, baked her a cake, and had a wee party for her. Grandma knew what a hard life Patsie and the others had with Aunt Lillianand even though money was tight wanted to do something special for Patsie. At the end of the two weeks Aunt Lillian arrives to get Patsie and grandma gives her hell for missing her daughter's birthday . . . Aunt Lillian says, but her birthday is in September. A saying of Patsie's was always: I married Gordie for his money and I'm not leaving him until I find it. A bittersweet story about Patsie would be when she got cancer. She ended up having numerous surgeries and she would always tell thedoctor she loved him and make him tellher that he loved her as well. She would even get him to hug her and kiss her cheek. Then as they would bewheeling her into surgery she'd look at the doctor and remind him that he loved her and you wouldn't let someone you love die now would you??!! I have told you about Willie having mental health issues - even though he was Patsie's brother, when hewould do something outrageous, like he once chained himself to a tree on the Ottawa Courthouse lawn, she would be the first to come out with something funny about it. She told me that even though she lived in a different city from Willie any time shewanted to see him all she had todo was turn on the 6 o'clock news.

In 1858, he received 2nd place in French Lecture, 2nd place in French Writing, and an Honorable Mention for his performance in his Epellation Class. He also received1st place in his Catechism Class. The following year, he received Honorable Mention in French Writing. - Baptism:9 JUN 1895 St Raphael, Bellechasse County, Quebec, Canada
- Event:Godparents Francois-Xavier PICARD and Delphine ARBOUR
- Residence:St-Raphael, QC, in 1901 (with her maternal grandparents as their adopted dau)
- Note:
Alma waseither born shortly before or shortly after her father's death. In any case, she was indeed baptised after her father's death. It appears as though her mother Philomene travelled all the way from Lowell, MA, to haveher baptised at home in St-Raphael, QC. This lends itself well to the assertion that Alma was born in Lowell, MA. Shortly after the little girl's baptism, Philomene must have left the baby with her parents, as it was no doubt next to impossible for a single mother to raise a child. Afew years later Philomene remarried; Alma seems to have never again lived with her mother even though her mother went on to have at least 5 more children with her second husband.

She had 7 children Annie was actually baptised with the name Odila ARBOUR.
There were two birth dates listed for Annie in the 1901 Census -- 1886 was crossed out and written over with 1887. However, it is doubtful that she was born in March and her sister Margaret wasborn in the following Dec or Jan. Although if this is correct, it could explain the death of their mother shortly afterward.
According to Sharon (WATSON) ARBOUR, Annie was born 25 Dec 1886. She also says that Annie was born in Chalk River, Renfrew Co, ON.

As a young man, George travelled to Ontario and remained there for as much as couple of years. In June 1882, he was present at the wedding of his cousin Vercheres GREGOIRE in Port Severn, Ontario. He then apprarently returned to Quebec.
Shortly after their wedding, George and Malvina travelled to Ontariofor a time. In June 1884, they were in Midland to act as godparents toGeorge's cousin William ARBOUR. In 1887, a George ARBOURwas farming part of Concession 13, Lot 12,betweenWaubaushene and Port Severn. Perhapshe is our George, as there are not known to be any others in that areaat this time.
By the middle of 1887, the young couple had returned to Quebec and seem to have stayed there for quite a while this time. They became godparents to nephew Philibert RIVET in June 1887 at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.By April 1891, George and Malvina were known to be living in Quebec during the Census. That year George was reportedly a farmer living in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. After this, George and Malvina again became godparents: to his cousin's daughter Anna ARBOUR in September 1891 and to hiscousin's son Francois COUTU in January 1901, both in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.
In April 1901, during the Census of that year, George and Malvina still lived in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. They owned a four-room house plus three outbuildings on one-acre of the 2nd Range, JolietteCanton. Georgewas reported to be a journeyman whoearned $300 that year. George and Malvina are thought to have had no children of their own. No births have been connected to them. However, both in the 1891 Census and in the 1901 Census, they were recorded with niece Domitille TALBOT, the daughterof Malvina's sister Marie-Louise PARENT and her husband Narcisse TALBOT. They seem to have adopted the girl.
The story of the girl's parents is somewhat unclear. Marie-Louise and Narcisse appear to have married in about 1883. Their daughter Marie TALBOT was born on 16 October 1884 in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie and baptised there on 18 October 1884. Marie'sstillborn twin was also born there on the 16th; this baby was buried on 20 October 1884. One year later, on27 October 1885, Domitille TALBOT was bornalthough her baptismal record has not yet been located. Young Marie TALBOT must havenot been a healthy child as she died in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie just three years later on 19 December 1883 and was buried there on 23 December 1887. Perhaps it was shortly after this that Marie-Louise and/or Narcisse passed away - although they were not buried inSt-Emelie-de-l'Energie - and Domitille came under the care of her Uncle George and Aunt Malvina. The complete explanation for their situation may never be known.
In later years, George and Malvina again returned to the baptismal font at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie to hold more godchildren: George's cousinJeanne Domitille MORIN in May 1904 and George's cousin Georges Gerald LASALLE in August 1912. | ARBOUR, Georges (I1959)
