He lived in Mortagne in the Perche region (nowadays the Orne department). He first married Renée Brière with whom he had at least nine children including our ancestor Zacharie. Renée Brière was buried at the Saint-Jean parish in Mortagne on May the 1st 1608. It is also there that Denis married again to Jeanne Rahir Gauthier on November 3rd 1608. They had at least four children: Léonard born in 1609, Denis born in 1612, Pierre and Michelle twins born in 1613. It is also in Mortagne that many of the Cloutier children later married. Denis Cloutier had a brother named Raoullin, married to Martine Lagneau. Denis Cloutier was buried in Mortagne on December 11th 1634.
