All this land belonged to Gamache at one time, and he parceled it outto his daughters when they married. Although he remained healthy and active into his late years, he retired from his medical practice. In 1897, at the age of 89, he rode his horse amile and a half to check on flood damage at the home of hisson-in-law, Mr. Riebold. Near the house he fell from his horse, and died three days later from his injuries, May 8, 1897. his wife Elizabeth died 2 years later on his birthday.

Heirs: sons Francis, Jerome, Elias, daughters Euphrosyne Robert, Josephine Johnston, Catharine Reibold. He states in this will that his sonsJerome and Elias are presumed dead.
In the file is a statement from the War Department, dated ~after~ Louis's death, saying that "The records on file in this office show that Elias, Jerome, and John Gamache were privates in Company F, 2d Missouri Infantry, CSA and that Elias was killed May 16, 1863, at the battle of Baker's Creek; that Jerome was missing in battle at Corinth, and supposed to have been killed, and that John died July 10 1862, at Camp Priceville, Mississippi." This article was sent to Louis P. Robert, husband ofEuphrosyne, daughter of Louis. They were probably looking for confirmation of the boys deaths in order to divide the estate.
Louis became guardian of Samuel, son of Louis' brother Gabriel and also of Leonora, daughter of Louis' brother Nicholas.
