    • ADOLPHE ADRIEN LANTHIER, b. June 15, 1865, Ripon, Quebec; d. July 21, 1948, North Cobalt, Ontario; m. (1) MELIE OUELLETTE, July 31, 1893, Bonfield, Ontario; b. June 28, 1875, Clarence Creek, Ontario; d. June 05, 1946, North Cobalt, Ontario; m. (2) DELIA DUVAL, July 31, 1947, North Cobalt, Ontario.

Per Aurore (Napoleon's daughter), the children were orphaned at an early age. Also, they wore Dutch shoes and lived with a family in New York.

Died just three days after his grand daughter, Marie Dorothy Lanthier, was married to Horace Desjardins.

      Per Dorothy:
Adrien worked in the USA, but she doesn't know where. He worked at a lot of things in his lifetime. He was a drover, someone who transports things by horse and wagon. He cut wood and sold it. He had a little store in the town of Cobalt and later inthe town of North Cobalt, where he lived from about the year 1920 until he died. Adrien also did some farming.
When it came time for Adrien to apply for his Old Age Pension, Rosetta wrote to Ripon to get his birth certificate. This is how we know his birthdate. The original certificate has apparently been lost.
He was a very quiet man. He was happiest when he was taking care of his animals - horses and cows. Emilie told her once that he loved to trade or barter. He would go to market in the neighbouring town and sometimes would get home late at night. Shewas not surprised at anything she would find tied to the front gate, it could be a calf or a goat.
He was illeterate, but could calculate figures in his head as fast as we could do it with a pencil.
When he had a little store, he sometimes let people buy on credit. He would keep track of this with his own little markings on a piece of paper, and would always remember what these markings meant.
He used to sing bits of songs when he was working. Emilie told the grandkids that in his younger days, he was a very popular guest at parties, and could sing for hours and never repeat any songs. He had quite the sense of humour. Dorothy remembers him saying something about a neighbour he didn't like: La moitie de ses mentries sont pas vraies".
He could be very suspicious of people at times, especially anyone connected to the government.
He was a healthy man until the year he died and he was a big man - over six feet tall. He had a high pain thresh hold. He was working in an isolated area once and was hit on the head so hard that he bit through his tongue. Apparently, he took a pair of scissors and cut off the loose pieces of his tongue. Dorothy heard another story that once he fell from a ladder onto a pitchfork which pierced his body in a very vulnerable place. He refused to see a doctor and just kept on working. The wounds did heal themselves. He could drive his team of horses in 30 below weather without mitts. He wore a moustache sometimes and the grandkids used to laugh at the icicles that hung from it.
Adrien corresponded with his brother Salomon in Manitoba. Rosetta wrote these letters for Adrien.

Adrien told Dorothy about a hunting trip when he caught some small furry animals and then put them in a small pouch. When he was walking along with the pouch thrown over his shoulder, one of the animals bit him on the behind!

Marriage Notes for ADOLPHE LANTHIER and MELIE OUELLETTE:
Per Dorothy (Lanthier) Desjardins, Adrien and Emilie lost their belongings twice in their lifetime. The first time was in Cobalt. There was a big explosion that Dorothy believes was caused by some accident with explosives somewhere in the town, andmany homes were damaged. The second time was in North Cobalt in 1922, when a forest fire spread through the area causing many deaths and much property damage. They escaped with the clothes on their backs. This is why there are no early records or souvenirs.

Adrien and Emilie went to Manitoba to visit Salomon sometime around 1936.

Marriage Notes for ADOLPHE LANTHIER and DELIA DUVAL:
      Per Dorothy, his grand daughter:

Adrien had taken care of his widowed mother for years, and then took care of hies mother-in-law for years. He never forgot that. When he lost his wife, he refused to come and live with us because he did not want to be a burden. Instead, he proposedto every widow he knew and some he didn't, until Madame Roy (per marriage certificate her name is Delia Duval) agreed to marry him, with the understanding that after he died, she would inherit his house. This was ok with his son, Hormisdas, becauseAdrien was very sharp and very aware until the day he died, and Hormisdas figured it was his business and did not interfere. However, when Adrien died about a year later, her family (that Hormisdas and family hardly knew) did not return any personal belongings. No letters, photographs or any of Emilie's things either. Hormisdas and Rosetta were upset, but did not want to interfere because of the arrangement that had been agreed to.
