Notes My grandmother (Isobel Connors) had a child out of wedlock. She never identified who the father was. That child was my aunt Lillian Ann. When Lillian was about a year old my grand-mother met and married my grandfather (Joseph Alexander Arbour). Lillian was aware that grandpa was not her biological father. She fell in love with grandpa's brother Willard Ernest Arbour. They hadseven children together. They later divorced.
From Catherine via email on 15 Jul 2009: Okay here goes: I am not sure where you got all those different last names for my Aunt Lilian. But I am 100% positive that her name was Lilian Ann Connors at birth. She wasborn in Westmount, Quebec,on 7 October 1930. She was born to my grandmother Isobel Connors. My grandmother never named Lilian's father. My family lived with Aunt Lilian for a month when we moved from Campbell's Bay, Quebec to Ottawa, Ontario when I was 10 years old. My mother and her 1/2 sister Lilian were very close. I do not know when Aunt Lilian married my great-uncle Willard. BUT it is highly likely that they had a couple of children before they married.
From Catherine via email on 19 Jul 2009: I spoke to my cousin Ruth (Lillian and Willard's daughter) on Friday. She is coming over for tea sometime this week and will bring her mother's birth registration card to me. I spoke to my Aunt Irene on Friday evening and she says that Grandma(Isobel Connors) probably did not have Lillian baptised. Here is the story I was told: Grandma got pregnant, she did not identify the father. Her father kicked her out and she went to stay with her older sister Sadie during the pregnancy. Lillian was a home birth. Aunt Irene figuresgrandma was ashamed and did not have her baptized because she did not want the baby to be registered as a "bastard" and "father unknown". After Aunt Lillian was born, my great-grandfather (George Connors) needed help at home so Grandma (and baby Lillian) went back home to help. She later met my grandfather, married him, and the rest is history. Mom told me on Friday evening when Aunt Irene was visiting that Aunt Lillian once found"something" in an oldtrunk Grandma had but she didn't know what it was. My Aunt Lillian tried almost to the end of my grandmother's life to find out who her father was - Grandma would never tell. There has got to be a story there.
From Catherine via email on 18 Aug 2009: Lillian (mom's 1/2 sister) married her "uncle" Willard. They had 7 children. Theirs was not a match made in heaven and those poor kids suffered for it. The marriage didn't last long. Aunt Lillian was anabusive mother and the kids were taken bythe Children's Aid Society a number of times - but always given back. The sad thing is out of the 7 children only 2 lived happy lives as adults. I was not particularily close to my Aunt Lillian. Weshared a love of vintage jewellery and I was given a few of her pieces when she passedaway.
