• Notes

  Robert died at the home of his daughter Sarah Jane Cowin, the ClarendonHotel in Douglas. This was at the time of 'The Big Snow' in 1895. The roads to Maughold were impassable so his coffin was put on a Knox`s trawler and taken to Ramsey, and then by road to Maughold Church. The 1881census for Onchan lists a Robert Corteen, Retired farmer, lodging at 19 Mona Street. Others at this address were: Robert Archer/Head/58 - Margaret Archer/wife/49 (born Maughold) - William Archer/Son/19 - WilliamCaley/Boarder/29/Locksmith (born Maughold) - Aubrey Caley/Boarder/16/Joiner (born Ramsey) - John Caley/Boarder/Scholar/8 (born Maughold) - Margaret Gelling/Servant/27 Extract from "The Ramsey Courier" February 15th 1895. p. 8 On Wednesday week, Robert Corteen, formerly of Ballasholaigue, Maughold, died at 9, Loch Promenade , Douglas. The interment was arranged to take place on Monday at Maughold Churchyard, but owing to the roads being blocked with snow, this arrangement could not be carriedout. Consequently, the steam trawler Skart, of Douglas, was chartered,and by this means the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Ramsey,where they arrived shortly after noon on Monday. The remains were placed in Mr. Dawson's hearse to await interment, and the funeral took place on Tuesday.
