Notes - Living at Fore Street, Kingsbridge in 1851. ARTHUR HINGSTON was baptised Jan 1772 in Moreleigh, the son of 2. Richard Hingston and Sarah (White) and died in 1824, drowned at sea in the exercise of his duties as an excise man (according to Vine where he is No. 805). He married BETSY GILLARD 11 Jan 1804 in Dodbrooke, by Licence, but this may have been a second marriage; an Arthur Hingston married Agnes Downing in 1796 according to TH-M, but she has not recorded where, nor are anychildren mentioned. A second marriage would normally be conducted by Licence rather than by Banns. Four children are mentioned in Vine - William, Henry, John and Edward. TH-M has found an Elizabeth Hingstone who received removal orders from Littleham (near Exmouth in Devon) on 22 Nov 1825 to Kingsbridge, with fivechildren Henry, Charles, Sarah Jane, Arthur and Bevil Gillard. The removal order would match with Betsy being widowed - she would presumably have been a charge on the parish and would have been returned to her birthplace. However, being unwell, the removal order was suspended until she was able to be moved. TH-M shows her burial on 16 Jan 1826, age 46, but does not say where. If this reading is correct, thechildren would have been orphaned, although some would have been old enough to look after themselves. Source Hingston web site.
