  • Notes
    • In the summer of 2002, Rena was coming out of church when she fell, broke her arm, and injured her face. She had just healed from those injuries when she fell at home and broke both her hips on 6 Nov2002. She had healed enough to return homeby the first week in April 2003.

From daughter Marilyn via email on 10 Oct 2007: Yesterday in the early morning hours Mom went to get out of bed to get to the bathroom and shefell. She fractured her right shoulder and also got a few black and blue marks. They put her arm in a bigsling and that is to be on for 4-5 weeks and then therapy for a few weeks after that. That seems to be all they can do for that kind of an injury. To top it all off she was coming down with a cold the day before this all happened and today she hardly had any voice left. Hope tomorrow will be a better day!

From daughter Marilyn via email on 05 Mar 2008: Just wanted to fill youin about Mom -- She is ok but has failed some since her last fall in Oct. I am still spending time there everyday to help her, especially with her daily personal care.

From daughter Marilyn via email on Saturday 16 May 2009: Mom has faileda lot this past winter. Her bad knee is really acting up so is findingit really hard now to get in and out of the van. As a result she does not go out very often. Nothing can bedone with her knee at her age so tries to carry on as is. This ageing process is hard to deal with and we do not have any control over it.

From daughter Marilyn via email on 12 Mar 2010: We are all keeping pretty good. It seems to take me longer now looking after Mom each day; shecertainly does not move around like she had been. Her bad knee gives her problems now more so thanbefore and her hearing is also worse. However, we just take things one day at a time. We still have Red Cross in one morning a week and she has had the same girl for some time which is good. Lawrence is doing well and between the two of us are looking after things ok. Peter is right ready to help with anything either there orhe is a big help to me at home and I really appreciate that.

From daughter Marilyn via email on 18 Aug 2010: Thanks for the picture of the boys on the first day of school. They sure have grown. We will print off a picture for my mother as I never know when shewill get up tosee it. She does not move very farfrom home now it seems, always more comfortable at home. I know her bad knee has been bothering her more now and she finds it hard getting in and outof the van when we have to take her for her doctor appointments.

From daughter Marilyn via email on 21 Aug 2010: Regarding my mother's name . . . She was called Eliza Laurena and that was her mother's wish that she be, but some of the younger ones in the family atthe time couldnot seem to get the whole thing together and they called her "Rena" and the name stuck. Everything regarding business though she is Eliza Laurena. Anyway, that is the simple story of how that came to be. Take care, Marilyn

From Rena in person on 16 Sep 2010: Rena never got to go out on Halloween (her birthday) because she was always helping the younger kids, "putting on faces."

From daughter Marilyn via email on 30 Oct 2010: Just a quick note to let you know that my mother went into hospital on Thurs and is not very well. It seems her whole system is shutting down. She fellin mid-Sept and it really did shake her upand shestarted to fail and somewhat quicklyafter that. She just seemed to give up on so much and then was not eating. When we went last night again to seeher she had much better color and with the oxygen and IV it was helping. She has beensleeping a lotand by the evening she is very tired so we just go to make sure everything is ok. At this point that is all we can do and they are keeping her comfortable. I was talking to Shirley yesterday and I do not know if shewas going tobe in touch with you ornot. I will try to keep you up on the news. Sorry to be late getting this news to you but have not been home much. Hope all is well with all the family. Marilyn

From nephew John O'HARA via email on 30 Oct 2010: Aunt Rena is in hospital. Tom says he thinks she fell recently. Marlyn told them just keeping her calm. She is 99 years old tomorrow 10/31. Dad

From daughter Marilyn via email on 02 Nov 2010: Just a quick note to let you know that my mother passed away early this am. She had been in the hospital for five days and seemed to pick up a little and then reallyfailed fast. She had her 99th birthday on Sun 31 Oct and did know the people that had stopped in to see her. Lawrence called Shirley and Tom this morning and we were not sure if they would e-mail you or your father, so please pass the word along to him for us. Mom's funeral mass ison Friday. I will be in touch later. Take care.
