In Apr 1940,Lawrence was serving with the 23rd Bombardment Group atHickam Field on the island of Oahu. The 21-year old from Maine was a Corporal with the US Army. He claimed that he had only finished the 8th grade. His being stationed in Hawaii would explain how he met Louise. Apparently they were not yet married in April 1940, as he was reported as being single. Therefore, one might conclude that Gilroy and James arenot his sons but are Louise's from a former relationship.
