Jacques BERTAULT-Ch.45-2Jacques and wife, Gelette Baun (Banne), and their daughter, Isabelle, widow of Julien Latouche, convicted of wanting to poison the husband of Isabelle and assassinating him, were sentenced as follows:Jacques Bertault and Gilette Baune (sp), taken from the prison of Quebec by the executioner of the High Justice, conducted to the front of the parish church door of this village, a rope around their neck, their wrists manacled,Bertault to be nude in a shirt, Baune to be nude in a shirt from the shoulders to the waist and kneeling, ask pardon from God and the king for the crimes committed by them; condemned in addition, the said Bertault to be strangled on Saint Andre cross that will be put on the scaffold built for this purpose in the center of the city, and then have his arms and thighs broken each by a stroke of a bar;Gilette Baune also condemned to be present at the execution of her husband, and to be hanged and strangled on a gallows that will be built for this purpose at this place.It is ordered that after the execution of Bertault, his body will be carried on a cart to Diamond Point, the designated place, to serve as an example; and having regard for the age of Isabelle Bertault, she being only 13 years old, by mercy and without consideration, is condemned to make amends in an honorable wayas directed. And to be present at the execution ordered for these persons, her father and mother, and furthermore fined 60 livresapplicable, half to the Recollets priests to pray for the repose of the soul of said Julien Latouche, the surplusof their goods acquired and confiscated to the king; directing the court to remit to Nicolas and Jeanne Bertault, the minor children of Jacques and Gilette Baune, the surplus of the fine and confiscated goods.NOTE; Jeanne Bertault and her husband, Mathurin Richard, were killed by the Iroquois on 12 Aug 1695. There is also no mention ofour ancestress, Marguerite Bertault (b. 1655, m. Denys Veronneau) possibly becauseshe was married in 1668, also at age 13, four years prior to theabove action.
