    Notes
    • On 24 Jan 1918, Beryl arrived in Port Huron, MI, from Canada. She was 18-years old and claimed no occupation. Beryl was coming from her father Walter's home at 78 Muncaster Street in Barrie, ON, and was headed for Parkfield, TN. Passage was paid byher mother and she carried no money. Interestingly, Beryl intended to "reside" with her "friend" Capt Arthur R Giddings in Parkfield. She was noted tobe 5'6" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. It is unclear whether Capt Giddings was serving in the US or Canadian military, as nothing else can be found about him on either side of the border.

Perhaps Beryl married Capt Giddings, as she later used his last name in referring to herself as Beryl Giddings.

On 30 Dec 1922, Beryl Giddings, now aged 22-years old and widowed, arrived in Buffalo, NY. She once again came from her father Walter's home, which was now located in Iroquois Falls, ON. As a studentnurse, she was headed for Fordham Hospitalin New York City, NY, and had no idea how long she planned to be there. This time, she was noted to be 5'5" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; she weighed 145 pounds. Beryl had $50 in her purse.

In Aug 1923, Beryl Giddings again arrived in Buffalo, NY. She reported virtually the same information that she had the prior December. She once again came from her father Walter's home in Iroquois Falls, ON. She was headed for Fordham Hospital in New York City, NY, and had no idea how long she planned to be there. She was noted to be 5'5" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; she weighed 145 pounds. Beryl had $50 in her purse.

Here is a bit of history about Park Field, TN, from http://themilitaryzone.com/bases/nsa_midsouth.htmlon 24 Aug 2009.
Naval Support Activity Mid-South - Millington, TN
Naval Support Activity Mid-South has a long and rich history, one which can be traced to the birth of military aviation itself and to our country's proudest moments. This site was originally established in November 1917 as Park Field, an Army Signal Corps Aviation School used to train pilots for service with the Allied Forces during WWI. By February 1918, flight operations were in full swing, butonly until November of that year when the Armistice was signed. Two days after the signing, training operations were ceased. At that time the airfield began pioneering airmail routes throughout Tennessee and the surrounding states. In March 1920, the government officially purchased Park Field. However, the airfield continuedto decline until itwas little more than a storage area for aircraft andparts. Ironically, the Stock Market "Crash" of 1929 breathed new life into Park Field. During the 1930s the field served as a transient camp for unemployed workers. In 1937 the Resettlement Administration took over the land and developed model farms used to demonstrate what could be achieved with correctly managed land. Park Field remained under this agency's jurisdiction until the outbreak of WWII. Just as the onset of WWI had given Park Field its birth in 1917, the declaration of war on 8 December 1941, had similar results, heralding the arrival of naval aviation to the Memphis area. In February of 1942, the Navy Shore Station Development Boardrecommended approval of a reserve aviation base on the former site of Park Field. On 15 September 1942, the Naval Reserve Aviation Base was officially commissioned on the south side of the station. On 1 January 1943, the Naval Reserve Aviation Base was renamed Naval Air Station Memphis. However, in April 1949, the base's functions completely changed, and a new Naval Air Station was established, different in both scope and function. The new NAS assumed logistic support for all thecommands at Navy Memphis, except the Naval Hospital. The boundaries included all Navy property on both sides of the Millington-Arlington Road (Navy Road). NAS Memphis continued its support and logistics role for some 50 years. The 1993 BaseRealignment and Closure Commission directed the realignment of Naval Air Station Memphis. NAS Memphis was redesignated Naval Support Activity Memphis 30 September 1995. The name was changed to Naval Support Activity Mid-South 1 October 1998,tomore closely identify the base's mission requirements and to reflect the Navy's approach to regionalization.

Very little can be found about Fordham Hospital, but it is thought to have been connected with Fordham University, which operated a medical school at one point that had closed sometime before 1905. Fordham University has several campuses located around New York City, one of which began in the Fordham neighborhood area of the Bronx, according to wikipedia on 24 Aug 2009.

A record of an Arthur Ray GIDDINGS has been found. Is he our Arthur? He was born in Murray River, PEI, on 09 Jan 1896, to John Thomas GIDDINGS. On 08 Jun 1915, he signed is Attestation Paper for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. At the time he was a single clerk and his father now lived in Fernie, BC. He swore his oath of service on 17 Aug 1915, at Vernon Camp. An additional paper was completed and signed the following year on 11 Mar 1916. He reported his name to be Arthur Raymond GIDDINGS and said he was born in Murray Harbor, PEI, on 09 Jan 1896. His father must have died by this point as he reported his next of kin not as his father but as his mother Jessie GIDDINGS, who still lived in Fernie, BC. The single man considered himself a journalist when he renewed his oath in Fernie, BC.
